Picture Slideshow Wednesday 12:00-12:45 in Lab 2
Come and see the year in review as you enjoy music and pictures from the entire year.  Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends are welcome.  We are cleaning out our desks in the morning so maybe you could bring home your child’s supplies.  Also, feel free to come with us to Dairyland.  We are purchasing cones with our last party fund money.

Star Reports Sent Home Last Tuesday
We took this on Monday.  I had a couple of students retake it because I knew they could do better, which they did J This was the final test of the year!

Fun Week of Rewards
This week students enjoyed the following:

*shopping at the AR Store with all of the points they earned from the year

*enjoyed choosing Bonus Point Prizes for their extra credit

*chose a prize for making their May AR goals

*spent all of their money in the final auction today

So when your child comes home with some new item, ask which reward it was!

Parent Surveys
Thank you so much for taking the time to complete this for me.  I am not being evaluated by it, but use it for my personal use to see parents’ opinions on how my third grade class went for their child. I was SO pleased to receive so many ‘yes’ votes and a special thank you to all who took the time to write a positive comment.  I only had three “somewhats” chosen out of all of the questions answered so I feel really positive about how I run my classroom and relate to others.  Again, thank you for your feedback!

Friday’s Challenge
Question: What is so unusual about this sentence:  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog?
Answer: It contains every letter in the alphabet.

Yearbooks Handed Out Thursday
We will take the remaining time after returning from the PWLC to sign them.  I have printed some booklets for those who did not order so they can have something for their friends to sign as well.

Words cannot express my bittersweet feelings as I am typing this last newsletter.  I get so attached to my students and know each and everyone of them so well by now that they seem like my own children.  I have had an exceptional year with a wonderful class to work with, awesome parents who supported my efforts and worked as a team with me, and pure enjoyment in what I enjoy – teaching.  I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and friends over the summer, but will miss my students.  They will always have a piece of my heart!  Thank you!

MCA Math Testing – 92% of My Students Made Goals!

You should have received your child’s report on Thursday.  It shows all three of the test scores.  The highest of the three scores is reported to the State of MN.  Only two students did not make the “350” goal and both were SO close and DID show improvement so they should still be proud of their accomplishments.  Overall, 82% of ALL third grade students made the “350” goal!

Send Baby Pictures By Monday (Optional)

We are having a fun activity where we guess who belongs to each picture.  If a student wants to be involved, I need the picture by Monday.

Riverwalk Rescheduled for Next Tuesday, 12:45-3:00

Due to the Celebration of Cultures scheduled on the original date of the 29th, we will go next Tuesday instead.  This field trip includes history of Fergus Falls through the Riverwalk as well as looking at the architectural features of downtown buildings.  We will be walking and meeting at the Joe Whitford statue on Summit Ave at 1:15.  Please let me know if you wish to come with.  This is an AWESOME field trip!

AR Store Shopping Monday

I will take the students into the art room to spend the points they have earned this year at our AR Store.  Ask your child what he/she purchased!

Mother’s Day Paintings

They turned out so beautiful due to the students receiving a great lesson in water color painting from our Adopt-A-Class senior friend and professional artist: Barb Smith.  The CD fish the students made for Father’s Day sure turned out nice too!

When I Graduate Stories

I mentioned last week that I had the graduating seniors come to my classroom and get their third grade work, pictures, have refreshments, and watch our video.  I will do the same thing for this class in nine years.  We are writing stories for this event, as I do each year, and will read them at our party.  They are predicting what their lives will be like when they graduate.  I will be sending home a copy of them next week.

1,000 Class Point Party Next Friday

Students voted to have their final reward to be another Junk Food-Video-Camp Out Party.  These are optional items they can bring:

Sleeping bag or blanket

Pillow

One Stuffed Animal

Slippers

Junk Food

A Closeable Drink

Attend Our Slideshow on May 30th from 12:00-12:45 – Computer Lab 2
This will be in the computer lab and will be a musical show to all of the pictures from the year in review.  Parents, Grandparents, and siblings are all invited.  If you have time, we will walk to Dairyland for a treat afterwards.  We are also cleaning our desks that morning and would love if parents could take some of these supplies with them.

Friday’s Challenge (optional)

This Week: What is the population of the City of Fergus Falls?

Answer: 13,620 on the population signs or 13,471 on the Fergus Falls Web Page

The Last Friday’s Challenge: What is so unusual about this sentence:  The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog?

Each year I ask my former third graders who are graduating from High School to come to a party.  They will be able to take samples of work I have saved from third grade, take pictures from our album, watch our video and enjoy snacks and drinks.  I will do it for my current class in 9 more years!  It is fun to reconnect with them and to find out what their future plans are.

Take a look at the handout that your child brought home with them and find a big spot to plant them!  It would be neat to have someone win a scholarship!

MAP Reading Test Score Packets in the Home Folder

Take a look at the two-page report.  On the first page, the spring goal score is generated by the computer information on what a child’s score was in the fall and what age they currently are.  I circled that goal and what your child actually got and have made some notes for you to read.   The second page is their actual score and it is broken down into more specific areas (like what I handed out at conferences for math). I was happy with most of the scores, except the first few students who completed their test in such a short time and possibly rushed through them (even though we discussed how the tests are not timed and to take your time to get your best score) J.  Other students had huge gains, several points over their expected spring goal.  These test scores will be used as one piece of data to determine if your child needs extra reading assistance next fall as well as what level of reading they are entering fourth grade with.

Heifers Vs Bulls

It is still 7 bulls to 6 heifers.  If the cows do not all have their calves by the end of the year, we will have to go with the latest numbers at that time.

Easter Egg Coloring Contest Vote
Congratulations to these winners:

1st – Sierra

2nd – Luke

3rd – Brandon

There was a three-way tie between these three students and we had to have a tie-breaking vote to determine the winners.  A total of 118 eggs were in the contest and each student could color one egg of each of the several designs.  See the pictures I sent out this week by email and they are also posted on my blog.

Measurement – Great for Cooking

Cooking is an excellent way to practice measuring cups, pints, ounces, and more, so encourage your child to help you cook in the kitchen. We completed this unit today and are moving onto a special unit on story problems and various math projects.  The groupings/teachers will stay the same as they currently are now.  The unit tests should come home next week.

New iPod Touch Apps

The PTO gave each grade level $300 to purchase more applications for our iPods.  I downloaded some of them this week and we are going to learn them and possibly teach them to other students this month.

Website of the Week

We read about Caine Monroy’s homemade arcade in our Time for Kids magazines this week.  He has a neat youtube video showing his neat project at:

http://cainesarcade.com/2012/04/caines-arcade-short-film/

Weather Alert Radio

Students have been discussing the weather lately, with our tornado drill practice and the storm we had this week.  They talk about their worries and how to stay safe.  I mentioned that we have a Midland weather radio at our home, which has a built in alert monitor from the National Weather Service that will beep first and then speak the alert when it enters our area.  These are especially great at night when you are sleeping and need to know that bad weather is coming.

Wrapping Up April This Week  The first day of a new month is always exciting in our room as everything changes.  This week we had our auction, bonus point prizes, egg coloring contest, moved desks, and more.  Your child may have come home with a prize that they earned or purchased!  Thank you for all of your donations!

Attend Our Slideshow on May 30th from 12:00-12:45

MAP Reading Test Wednesday @ 8:40

We take this test both in the fall and spring.  Students are expected to reach a certain number according to how they tested in the fall and their age.  I will give them that number so they will know if they made their goal when their score appears at the end of the test.  I will hand out the test reports on Friday so take a look in the home folder for that.  We will NOT be having a MAP math test this spring due to having 3 MCA computerized math tests this year.

Literature Study in Reading

This week we have been exploring types of fiction, such as historical, realistic, science and fantasy.  Ask what your child is learning about them.

Kind News Website

We receive a magazine from the Humane Society called Kind News.  We learned about 60 ferel cats that were brought to an island by Navy personnel.  When they left, they also left the cats behind.  The Humans Society rescued them and now have a live cam on the shelter that they are staying in and you can even navigate around by using the scrolling options on the sides.  Check it out at:

Humanesociety.org/catcam

Wow, another month seems to have flown by and we are entering the final month of school!  Next week we will have our auction, bonus point prizes, AR goal rewards, set new AR goals, move desks and more.  This month for AR we will have free Applebee’s Kids Meals for those students who made their goals because the Pizza Hut Book-it Program ended in March.  Students also get $50 worth of auction money for making goals.

Tornado Drills

We practiced the State wide drill on Thursday.  Have a family talk as to where you should go in your home to be safe.

New Math Unit on Measurement

We completed our multiplication unit.  Look for your child’s test in the home folder.  The new unit and groups we started today is on measurement.  There is a parent letter in the home folder as well.  Having your child help measure things while cooking is an excellent way to reinforce the liquid measurement skills.

It was a little damp but still fun at the PWLC today.  We really enjoyed all of the adults who came to help out - check them out in the pictures with their student.  We saw the Canada Geese, Blue-winged Teal, Red-Winged Blackbird, Tree Swallow and more.  We also learned how to use a binoculars.  Ask your child about it!

MCA Reading Tests Next Tuesday and Wednesday

These are the Minnesota Comprehensive Reading tests.  These are paper-pencil tests that are in four sections, one in the am and one in the pm each of the two days.  Next year these tests should be computerized like the Math test is this year. A student only gets this one chance (compared to three tests in math) for a score so please make sure that your child is well rested and has eaten breakfast so they can be at their best.  Results are usually mailed directly to your home sometime in the summer as they take longer to correct than the computerized tests.

Need Antibacterial Wipes

We need wipes to keep our desks and room clean.  Please consider donating some for us.

Heifers Vs Bulls

We are having a contest between the boys and girls as to how many calves we will have on our farm by the end of the calving season.  Right now it is 5 heifers to 4 bulls.  We have 7 more cows that are yet to calf.  The winner will go first in line for the day and will have no homework for that day!

Festival of Cultures

Posted by email
Festival of Cultures
The Festival of Cultures is a celebration of our community's cultural heritage.  This event is being held
at M State from 6-8:30 pm Thursday, April 12.  The sponsors for this year’s event are the Fergus Falls
Public Schools' Cultural Diversity Program, Pelican Rapids Public Schools, Hillcrest Lutheran
Academy, Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Fergus Falls Human Rights
Commission and Forward Fergus Falls.
Last year's event featured 15 different cultural/ethnic displays and drew over 400 participants from the
Fergus Falls community. A highlight of this year's evening is the opportunity to sample the tastes of
numerous cultures. Local Mexican and Chinese restaurants will be back to share taste samples. This
year's festivities will include food booths from the Somalian and Mexican communities of Pelican
Rapids as well as Norwegian and Philippine cuisine. The evening will also feature a variety of
performances including a Native American Blessing Ceremony performed by the Buffalo River Pow
Wow group, Norwegian dancers, a Tae Kwon Do demonstration and African drumming. Due to the
solemn and spiritual nature of the Blessing Ceremony, organizers ask that the Legacy Hall area
remain respectfully quiet from 6-6:30 pm.
This is exciting event that I hope many of you can attend. If you would like to share an artifact display,
performance or food tastes representing your cultural heritage, please contact Dawn Koennicke at
218-998-0544, ext. 2610 or dkoennicke@fergusotters.org.
